My name is Heisue

(pronounced hey-sue! she/her)

I’m originally from Seoul, South Korea, but my home base is in the land of Tongva and Chumash, colonized as Los Angeles, CA. It is important to me to honor the roots of where I am from, where I am currently, and how I am benefiting from them - especially as a yoga educator who is not of South Asian descent. Even though I’ve lived here for 14 years my haunts have included Boston, New York City, and Amsterdam.

I grew up watching my grandfather practice yoga every evening after he came back home from work. Even though I could not name this daily pre-dinner routine, his serene and peaceful disposition left an impression. Through the years, the physical practice of yoga or body movement has been my constant companion. Initially, my yoga practice was to mentally check out, however, after a few injuries and life-events, there was an immediate need for mindful self-inquiry practice, and a new relationship with yoga and meditation began.

I am grateful for the many teachers I’ve studied with and am a proud graduate of the following teacher training programs. Noah Mazé’s 300-hour YTT, Heart + Bones’ training on a modern and sustainable approach to yoga, trauma-informed training with the Prison Yoga Project, Off the Mat Into the World’s social justice and leadership training, and Functional Range Conditioning’s mobility program.

I am currently most inspired by a senior Iyengar teacher, Marla Apt, and am studying with Tiffany Cruikshank, the founder of Yoga Medicine for her Yin and Meditation training.
