Studio Happy Memories and
Good Photographs, 2016

Studio Happy Memories and Good Photographs grew from my engagement with the “Koryoin” community in Gwangju.

Koryoin refers to ethic Koreans living in the former Soviet States who migrated from Korea. After learning that many Koryoins like to have their family portraits taken at a photo studio while wearing Korean traditional clothes (Hanbok), to feel more Korean, and to feel more authentic Korean family.

This project is an investigation of aesthetics, and people’s interlinked experience of immigration and displacement. I coordinated a one-day pop up photo studio for Koryoin. The studio owner took in charge of post-production, by following the most desirable Photoshop skills for traditional family portraits in current Korea.
