In Search of Glück: Men and Women, Black and White, Under and Above, I interviewed guest workers who immigrated during the 1970’s and 80’s to Germany. Besides the economical, West Germany recruited South Korean laborers in support of their own ideological alignment. It can be interpreted as to preserve parity with East Germany, who recruited workers and students from North Korea.

Guest workers were retrained in one of two servic careers: men as miners and women as nurses, regardless of their educational backgrounds. The relationship between labor, opportunity, and displacement are surveyed in the context of how these relationships deconstruct the meaning of “home”; which is then rebuilt, replaced, and/or substituted.
